Not every gold chain sold in South Africa is genuine gold. Many chains sold online and in fashion outlets are gold-plated, which means a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal such as brass or stainless steel. That layer wears through within months. The chain discolours, leaves marks on the skin and sometimes causes reactions as the base metal is exposed.
Every chain at Aria's Jewellery Palace is solid, hallmarked gold. A 9ct gold chain carries the hallmark 375. An 18ct chain carries the hallmark 750. Both stamps confirm the purity of the gold throughout the entire chain, not just the surface. Any registered South African jeweller can verify this for you with a loupe. 9ct vs 18ct Gold Chains
9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold. The alloy of copper, silver and zinc that makes up the remaining 62.5% gives 9ct gold its hardness. For a chain you plan to wear every day, 9ct is the practical choice. It is more resistant to scratching and everyday wear than higher-purity golds, and it costs less per gram, which means you can buy a longer or heavier chain for the same budget.
18ct gold contains 75% pure gold. The colour is richer and deeper than 9ct, particularly noticeable in yellow gold. 18ct is softer than 9ct but still durable enough for regular wear with proper care. If you are buying a chain as a significant purchase or an heirloom piece, 18ct is worth the premium. The difference in colour between 9ct and 18ct is visible side by side, especially in yellow gold.

Caring for Your Gold Chain
Gold chains need regular care to keep them looking their best. Wipe your chain down with a soft cloth after each wear to remove skin oils, sweat and cosmetic residue. These build up in the links over time and dull the surface. Store your chain in a fabric-lined box or a separate pouch to prevent tangling and scratching from other pieces.
To clean your chain properly, soak it in warm water with a small drop of mild dish soap for ten minutes. Use a soft toothbrush to work gently between the links, rinse thoroughly under clean water and dry completely before storing. Do this monthly if you wear the chain regularly.
