Personalised bracelets South Africa

Made to order in the Aria Jewellery Palace workshop in Cape Town and delivered insured nationwide. Twelve designs, from R895 to R8,495, engraved or cut with a name, an initial, a date or a fingerprint.

A bracelet is a harder thing to personalise well than a necklace, and it is worth knowing why before you choose one. It has to fit a wrist rather than hang from a neck, so a measurement is involved. It lives on the hand you use, so it takes ten times the contact a pendant does. And the engraving surface is small, so what you write has to earn its space.

Get those three right and it becomes the piece worn most, because it sits where the wearer can see it all day. Everything below is aimed at getting them right. The wider range sits in personalised jewellery, alongside personalised necklaces and personalised rings.

The twelve designs

Bracelet What it carries From
Personalised Name Bracelet A name cut in script, suspended along the chain R895
Mama Bracelet in Script Letters Mama in a flowing cut script R895
Diamond Heart Bracelet A heart with a diamond, engravable on the reverse R1,250
Personalised Ladies Gold ID Bracelet A slim ID plate, engraved across the face R1,295
Personalised Initial Bracelet A single initial, in silver or gold R1,395
Personalised Engraved Infinity Bracelet An infinity symbol with engraving along the bar R1,750
Faith, Love and Hope Bracelet The three symbols together on one chain R1,795
Sterling Silver Engraved ID Bracelet A wider plate with room for a full line of text R1,995
Personalised Monogram Bracelet Interlocking initials worked into a monogram R2,295
Personalised Heart Fingerprint Bracelet An actual fingerprint pressed into a heart R2,795
Sterling Silver Infinity Name Bracelet A name written into the infinity loop itself R3,595
Sterling Silver Multilink Bracelet A heavier multi link bracelet, engravable R8,495

Every design is offered in more than one metal, and the price shown is the starting price, which is sterling silver.

Measuring a wrist properly

This is the part that decides whether the bracelet gets worn or sits in a drawer, and it takes thirty seconds.

Wrap a strip of paper or a tape measure around the wrist bone, snug but not tight, and mark where it meets. Measure that in centimetres. Then add for the fit you want.

Wrist measures Order How it will sit
14cm to 15cm 17cm Close to the wrist, minimal movement
15cm to 16cm 18cm The most ordered women’s size
16cm to 17cm 19cm Comfortable, slides a little
17cm to 19cm 20cm to 21cm Men’s sizing, or a deliberately looser drape

Two things people get wrong. Measuring first thing on a cold morning gives a smaller number than the wrist is most of the day, so measure in the afternoon. And a bracelet with a cut name or a heavy charm hangs from the underside of the wrist, so it wants a fraction more room than a plain chain in the same size.

Buying blind for someone else? 18cm covers most women and 21cm most men. Nearly every chain bracelet here can be adjusted before it ships, so tell us if you would rather be sure.

Chain, ID plate or bangle

Personalising works differently depending on the form, and choosing the form first makes everything after it easier.

Form How the personalisation sits Suits
Chain with a cut name The name hangs and moves with the wrist Names, and anyone who wants it visible
Chain with a charm or symbol Engraving hides on the reverse of the charm Something private rather than announced
ID plate Text sits flat across the top of the wrist Longer wording, dates, and men
Bar or infinity Engraving runs along a fixed bar Short lines, initials and dates
Bangle Engraving wraps the outside, or hides inside A gift where sizing must be forgiving

If sizing worries you more than anything else, a bangle solves it, because it slips over the hand rather than fastening to a measurement. Those sit in sterling silver bangles and can be engraved to order.

How much text actually fits

An engraving surface on a bracelet is small, and the honest guidance is to say less than you want to.

A slim ID plate takes roughly a name or a short date. A wider plate takes a full line, which is around twenty characters before the letters get too small to read comfortably at arm’s length. A bar or infinity piece sits between the two. A charm reverse takes initials and a year, and little else.

Cut letters follow a different rule, because there the letters are the object. A four letter name reads beautifully. A ten letter name becomes a wide piece that wraps toward the side of the wrist, so it needs the chain length adjusted with it.

The instinct to fit a whole sentence is a common one and it almost always produces a piece nobody can read. Two words and a date outlives a paragraph.

Every bracelet on this page is made after you order, so the wording cannot be changed once cutting starts and the piece cannot be returned. That is standard for personalised jewellery worldwide, for the obvious reason that nobody else wants a bracelet with your sister’s name on it. Copy the spelling from a message rather than typing it from memory, tell us which side you want engraved, and send the wrist measurement with the order. If you would like the wording read back to you before anything is cut, ask, and we will confirm it in writing. Mistakes we make, we fix.

Fingerprint bracelets

The Personalised Heart Fingerprint Bracelet at R2,795 carries an actual fingerprint pressed into the metal, and it is the piece people ask the most questions about, so here is how it works.

You send the print. The simplest method is ink on plain white paper, pressed once firmly without rolling, then photographed in good light. We will tell you if the image is clear enough before anything is made, and if it is not we will ask for another rather than working from a guess.

The print is then reproduced into the metal, ridges and all, so the piece carries the actual pattern rather than a generic texture. Held at reading distance it looks like a soft impression. Up close it is unmistakably one person’s print.

Two uses dominate. New parents ordering a baby’s print, which is the reason most of these are made. And memorial pieces, where a print taken before someone died becomes something wearable afterwards. If that is your situation, message us rather than ordering through the form, and we will handle it properly and carefully.

Which metal survives a wrist

A wrist is the harshest place on the body for jewellery. It hits desks, steering wheels, door frames and gym equipment all day, which changes what the metal choice means here compared with a necklace.

Sterling silver Gold plated silver Solid 9ct gold
Marks over time Yes, and polishes back Plating thins at the contact points first Marks less, and polishes back
Where wear shows Underside of the plate and the clasp Raised edges of letters and the clasp Barely, over years
Can be repaired Yes, indefinitely Replating is possible, cut letters make it delicate Yes, indefinitely
Honest verdict The right choice for most people Best for occasional wear rather than daily The one you keep

The plated caveat matters more on a bracelet than anywhere else. A gold plated pendant may keep its face for years because it hangs still. A gold plated bracelet worn every day on a working hand will show wear far sooner. If it has to be gold and it has to be daily, go solid.

Which wrist, and wearing it with a watch

Most people wear a bracelet on the non dominant wrist, which is the one that takes fewer knocks, and that is the sensible default for a piece with a name on it.

If it is going on the same wrist as a watch, keep the bracelet fine and let the watch lead, or the two grind against each other and both suffer. A cut name bracelet against a steel watch case is the pairing that damages fastest.

Stacking two personalised bracelets works when one is a plate and one is a chain. Two plates knock together and scratch. If you want a stack, mix in a plain bangle or a chain bracelet from sterling silver bracelets or gold bracelets so the engraved piece keeps its face.

Who these get bought for

The occasion What works From
A new mother Mama bracelet, or a name bracelet with the baby’s name R895
A new baby A fingerprint heart, kept until they are old enough to wear it R2,795
A bridesmaid or godmother An initial bracelet, one per person, same design R1,395
An 18th or 21st An ID bracelet engraved with the date R1,295
An anniversary A monogram of both initials, or an infinity with the date R1,750
A memorial A fingerprint piece, or a plate with a name and dates R1,995
For a man A wider ID plate, engraved on the reverse rather than the face R1,995

The bridesmaid case is worth a note. Ordering several of the same design in one go is straightforward, and telling us at the outset means the pieces are made together and match properly rather than being cut weeks apart.

Bracelets for men

Men take engraved bracelets more readily than engraved anything else, because an ID plate is a recognisable object rather than a decorative one. The Sterling Silver Engraved ID Bracelet at R1,995 is the piece most often ordered for a man here.

Two pieces of advice. Engrave the reverse rather than the face if he is private about it, since the message is then his rather than everyone’s. And size it generously, because a men’s bracelet that grips the wrist feels wrong in a way a woman’s does not. The wider men’s range sits in mens bracelets and mens jewellery.

Children and babies

Personalised bracelets for children are ordered constantly, usually for a christening or a first birthday, and there are two sensible approaches.

Buy to fit now, at around 13cm to 15cm, and accept that it will be outgrown but worn and photographed in the meantime. Or buy to keep, sized for an adult, given now and worn later, which is what most people choose for a fingerprint piece.

Either way, a plain fastening beats a decorative one on a child, and a piece worn by a small child should be checked often rather than assumed to be secure.

Sending us what we need

Three things get a personalised bracelet made without back and forth. The wording, spelled exactly as you want it and copied rather than typed. The wrist measurement in centimetres, or the length you want if you already know it. And the metal.

Send all three on WhatsApp to 061 408 4046 or in the order notes, and add a photograph if you are copying something you have seen. For a fingerprint piece, send the print image in the same message and we will assess it before quoting.

Complex pieces are laid out and sent back to you to approve first. That step exists because a monogram or a multi initial arrangement can be read two ways, and it is far better to settle that on a screen than in metal.

Looking after an engraved bracelet

Engraving fills with hand cream, soap and the general residue of a day, and that is what makes lettering hard to read rather than any fading of the metal. A soft toothbrush, warm water and a drop of dish soap clears it out, and the letters look newly cut again.

Take it off for the gym and for anything involving weights, because a bracelet caught between a bar and a wrist is how plates bend. Take it off before swimming too, since chlorine attacks the alloys in both silver and gold.

On plated pieces, use nothing abrasive at all. No polish, no dips, no bicarbonate. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth is the whole routine, because everything stronger takes the gold off the high points first.

Cut letters or engraving, and how to choose

Two entirely different techniques sit behind the pieces on this page, and they age differently.

Cut letters are exactly that. The metal is cut into the shape of the name, so the letters are the object and there is nothing to fill or fade. They read instantly, from across a table, and they are what most people picture when they think of a name bracelet. The trade off is fragility, because fine script letters can bend if the piece is caught, and a bent letter needs a jeweller rather than a fingernail.

Engraving cuts into a solid surface instead. The plate stays strong, the message stays private until someone looks closely, and nothing protrudes to catch on a sleeve. It suits longer wording, dates and anything meant for the wearer rather than the room.

The practical rule is this. If the name is the point, cut it. If the message is the point, engrave it. If the person is hard on their hands, engrave regardless, because a plate survives a working day that a script name will not.

Turning an existing bracelet into a personal one

You do not always need to buy a new piece. Plenty of what the workshop does is adding personalisation to something already owned.

A plain ID bracelet can be engraved after the fact. A charm can be added to a chain bracelet already on the wrist. A bangle can be engraved inside where nobody sees it. And an inherited piece that no longer fits can be resized and engraved in the same visit, which is often what people actually want when they arrive holding something of their mother’s.

Bring it in or send a photograph with a description of what you want added. We will tell you honestly whether the piece takes engraving well, because some finishes and some very thin plates do not, and it is better to hear that before than after.

Questions

How do I measure a wrist?

Wrap paper or a tape around the wrist bone, snug but not tight, and measure it in centimetres. Add roughly 2cm for a comfortable fit, or use the table above.

What size should I order if I cannot measure?

18cm suits most women and 21cm most men. Say so when you order and we will make it adjustable where the design allows.

Can the bracelet be shortened or lengthened later?

On chain designs, usually yes. On fixed bar and bangle designs it is harder, so getting the size right at the outset matters more.

How many characters can I engrave?

A slim plate takes a name or a date. A wider plate takes about twenty characters before the text gets too small to read easily. Less reads better than more.

Can I engrave both sides?

On most plates, yes. Front and back are quoted together, so ask when you order rather than after.

How does the fingerprint bracelet work?

You send a clear print, easiest as ink on white paper photographed in good light. We confirm the image is usable before making anything, then reproduce the actual ridges into the metal.

Can you use a fingerprint of someone who has died?

Yes, if a print exists. Message us directly rather than ordering through the form and we will take you through it carefully.

Can I return a personalised bracelet?

Not once it is made, because it carries specific wording and cannot be sold to anyone else. If we cut or engrave it incorrectly, we remake it.

Which metal should I choose?

Sterling silver for daily wear, solid 9ct gold for something kept for decades. Gold plated suits occasional wear rather than everyday, because a wrist wears plating faster than a neck does.

Will engraving wear away?

Cut engraving does not disappear on solid metal. What makes it hard to read is residue filling the letters, which a soft brush and soapy water clears.

Can I order several matching bracelets?

Yes, and it is a common request for bridesmaids or a group of friends. Tell us up front so they are made together and match properly.

Do you make personalised bracelets for children?

Yes. Either sized to fit now, around 13cm to 15cm, or sized for an adult and kept until they grow into it.

Do men wear these?

Frequently, in the form of an engraved ID plate. Engrave the reverse if he would rather it were private, and size it generously.

Which wrist should it be worn on?

The non dominant one takes fewer knocks. Keep it off the watch wrist unless the bracelet is fine, since the two will grind against each other.

How long does it take?

It depends on the design and the workshop queue, so we give you a date at the point of ordering. Tell us your deadline before you buy.

Do you deliver across the country?

Yes, free and fully insured with tracking, to any address in South Africa.
