This is the decision that changes your budget by a factor of four, and most jewellers will not give you a straight answer on it because they earn more on one of the three. Here is the honest version.

Read the resale row again, because it is where most of the myth sits. A diamond is not an investment. It is jewellery, and jewellery sells for a fraction of retail whoever mined it. Buy the stone you want to look at every day, not the one you imagine selling.
If a mined stone matters to you, or to her, or to her mother, then buy the mined stone and do not feel talked out of it. That instinct is the reason this page exists. What a diamond engagement ring costs in South Africa
The three months salary rule was written by an advertising agency in the 1930s. Ignore it. Spend what you can spend without borrowing, put the money into the stone and the metal rather than a brand name, and remember that the ring is the start of the expense rather than the end of it.

The four Cs, in plain language
Every diamond is described by cut, colour, clarity and carat. They are not equally important, and knowing which two to spend on is most of what a jeweller knows that you do not.

The practical version is this. Spend on cut, then carat. Save on colour and clarity by buying a stone that looks perfect to the eye rather than one that scores perfectly on paper. A well cut G colour SI1 stone will outshine a badly cut D flawless every time, and it costs a great deal less.
Yellow gold helps here too. A slightly warmer stone set in yellow gold reads as white against the metal, which means the same money buys more carat weight. In white gold the warmth shows sooner, so that is where colour grade earns its cost.
Certification, and what to ask for
A certificate is an independent laboratory’s opinion of the stone, written before it was set. It is what stops you paying for a grade you did not get. Ask for it on any natural diamond above roughly a third of a carat and read three lines on it: the carat weight, the cut grade and the measurements.

Diamond shapes and how they wear
Shape changes how a ring reads on a hand more than carat weight does. Elongated shapes cover more finger and look larger than their weight. Round throws the most light. Photographs flatten all of it, so judge shape on a hand rather than a screen wherever you can.

Yellow, white or rose gold

Tanzanite and diamond rings
Two of the rings on this page pair diamonds with tanzanite, and they are worth understanding rather than scrolling past. Tanzanite is found in one small area of northern Tanzania and nowhere else on earth, which makes it rarer than diamond by any measure that counts.
