A solid 9ct gold band in the same width costs between six and twenty times more, weighs roughly four times as much on the finger, and marks more easily. Titanium is light enough to forget, hard enough to take daily knocks, and cheap enough that losing one on a fishing trip is annoying rather than catastrophic.

Titanium ring prices by style
Titanium is not priced by weight the way gold is, so the price follows the work rather than the size. A plain 8mm band costs the same as a plain 5mm one. What adds cost is an inlay, a colour finish or a second metal.

What titanium actually is
Titanium is a light structural metal used in aircraft, surgical implants and marine hardware. Jewellery grade titanium is the same material, finished to a jewellery standard.

The nickel point matters more than people expect. If a man has ever come out in a rash under a watch back or a cheap ring, that is almost always nickel. Titanium removes the problem entirely, which is why it suits men with sensitive skin better than any other metal here.
Titanium cannot be resized, so get the size right first. There is no way around this. The metal is too hard to cut, stretch and re-solder, so a titanium ring that does not fit has to be replaced rather than adjusted. Three rules. Measure at the end of a normal day, because fingers are smallest first thing and in cold weather. Size for the knuckle, not the base of the finger, since the ring has to pass over it. And go half a size up on anything 8mm or wider, because a wide band sits tighter than a narrow one at the same measurement. Read the failure mode row carefully, because it is the difference nobody explains in a shop. Titanium scratches, which means an old titanium ring looks used. Tungsten resists scratching but is brittle, so a hard enough knock cracks it in one piece rather than marking it. Gold does neither, it just slowly bends and wears, and it can be repaired forever.
For a man who works with his hands and wants the ring to survive, titanium is the sensible answer. For a man who wants weight and a mirror finish that stays sharp, tungsten is the better fit.

Titanium changes the usual advice about width. In gold, a wide band is heavy and expensive, so most men go narrower. In titanium neither applies, which is why 7mm and 8mm are the two most common choices here rather than 5mm.

Black titanium, and what black actually means
Black rings are the fastest growing part of this category and the least well explained, so here is the honest version.
Most black titanium is a coating or a colour plating over the metal. It looks excellent and it is hard wearing, but it is a surface layer, and over years of contact it can thin at the high points where the ring rubs. When that happens the natural grey titanium shows through.
Black zirconium is different. The black is created by oxidising the surface of the metal itself, which produces a ceramic layer that is part of the ring rather than sprayed onto it. Either way, buy black knowing what it is. Anyone who tells you a black coating will never wear is selling rather than explaining.
Inlays
An inlay is a second material set into a channel in the titanium, and it is where this category stops looking industrial and starts looking like jewellery.

Can a titanium ring be cut off in an emergency?
Yes, and this myth costs people sleep for no reason.
Titanium is hard, but it is not harder than the tools used to remove rings. Hospital emergency departments and jewellers cut titanium with standard ring cutters, and where that fails a pair of bolt cutters cracks the band. It takes slightly longer than gold and it is entirely routine.
What you should not do is panic about it. If a finger swells after an injury, the ring gets removed the same way any other ring does. Tungsten is actually removed differently, by cracking rather than cutting, which is faster still.
Who titanium suits
Four groups buy most of the titanium rings that leave this workshop.

Buying a titanium ring online

Ring size changes between fingers on the same hand, and a 3mm band and an 8mm band in the same size fit completely differently. What a titanium ring costs to replace
This is the quiet argument for the metal and nobody makes it out loud. A wedding band gets lost, most often in the sea, at the gym or during a house move. Replacing a R695 titanium band is a mild irritation. Replacing a R20,000 gold band is an insurance claim and a conversation.
