Sterling silver jewellery in South Africa

Solid 925 sterling silver from Aria Jewellery, made in Cape Town and delivered nationwide. One hundred and sixty-six pieces, from silver moon and star studs at R195 to a solid silver curb chain at R18,995.

Silver is where most people start and where a lot of people stay. It costs a fraction of gold, it takes the same finishing, and at R195 to R700 you can build a collection rather than buy one piece. The trade-off is tarnish, which is not damage and takes about a minute to reverse. There is a section on that below.

What 925 actually means

Pure silver is too soft for jewellery, so it is alloyed to 92.5% silver and stamped 925. That stamp is the whole test. Everything in this collection carries it, apart from a small number of gold plated pieces which say so on the product.

Sterling silver is solid metal all the way through, so it can be resized, repaired and polished, and it suits sensitive skin because there is no nickel base underneath. Silver plated jewellery is base metal with a thin silver coating that wears through, exposing what is beneath, which is where green skin and reactions come from. Once plating has worn there is nothing to repair.

Why silver tarnishes, and why it does not matter much. Tarnish is a reaction between silver and sulphur in the air. It is a surface film, not corrosion, and it does not eat into the metal. A silver polishing cloth removes it in under a minute. Coastal air, chlorine, perfume and hairspray all speed it up, which is worth knowing in Cape Town and Durban. Store silver dry, in a sealed bag with the air pressed out, and it will barely tarnish at all between wears.

Choosing silver for everyday wear

If you want Choose Why
Something to never take off Huggie earrings or a fine chain Hinged or light enough to forget
To build a look over time Stacking rings from R245 Add one at a time, wear three or four together
Presence without a gold budget A 10mm or 16mm curb chain More visual weight than fine gold at the same price
A gift with no sizing risk A pendant or a bracelet Neither depends on a ring or bangle size
Something meaningful A locket, or an engraved piece Silver takes engraving cleanly and cheaply

Silver and gold together

Mixing metals stopped being a rule worth following a long time ago. A silver chain with a gold pendant works. Silver stacking rings next to a gold band work. If you want them to sit together deliberately rather than accidentally, keep the widths similar and let one metal lead.

If you would rather match, the same styles run through gold jewellery, and gold plated jewellery sits between the two on price.

Caring for sterling silver

Wear it. Silver tarnishes fastest sitting in a drawer, because the oils from your skin actually slow the reaction down.

Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush and a dry cloth for cleaning. A silver polishing cloth for tarnish. Do not use toothpaste, which is abrasive and will scratch the finish over time.

Take silver off before swimming. Chlorine is harder on it than anything else it will meet.

Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and cream. Those three do more to dull silver than daily wear does.

Our silver jewellery care guide covers it in more detail.

Questions

Is sterling silver real silver?

Yes. 92.5% pure silver alloyed for strength, stamped 925. Pure silver on its own is too soft to make jewellery from.

Will it turn my skin green?

Solid sterling silver does not. That reaction comes from copper in plated or costume jewellery. If it has happened before, it was almost certainly not 925.

How do I stop it tarnishing?

Store it dry in a sealed bag, put it on after perfume and cream, and take it off before swimming. A polishing cloth reverses tarnish in a minute.

Can silver rings be resized?

Yes, in most cases. Send us a message with the ring and the size you need and we will tell you what is possible.

Is silver good for sensitive ears?

Usually yes, because there is no nickel base to react with. Reactions almost always come from plated earrings where the post has worn through.

Do you engrave silver?

Yes. Silver takes engraving cleanly and it is the most affordable metal to personalise. See personalised jewellery.
