Gold bracelets in South Africa

Part of the gold jewellery collection at Aria Jewellery. Solid 9ct and 18ct gold bracelets, made to be worn every day rather than kept for occasions.

A bracelet takes more punishment than any other piece you own. It knocks against desks, steering wheels and door handles all day. That is why the construction matters more here than it does on a chain, and why nothing in this collection is plated. The gold runs through the whole piece, so it cannot wear back to base metal at the clasp or along the edges.

This collection holds 29 pieces. Solid gold bracelets start at R3,595 and run to R175,200 for a 4ct diamond tennis bracelet in 18ct white gold. Charm and personalised styles are made in either silver or 9ct gold, so those start lower.

Gold bracelet prices by style

Price follows weight. A 6.2mm figaro uses roughly three times the gold of a 1.9mm figaro, which is why the same style spans such a wide range.

Style How it wears From
Singapore and ball Fine and fluid with a soft twist. The lightest solid gold bracelet we make. R3,595
Paper clip Elongated links. Modern, and the easiest to layer with a watch. R4,895
Figaro, 1.9mm to 6.2mm Alternating long and short links. The most requested bracelet style. R5,095
Belcher, 2.6mm Round open links. Classic, and it sits flat on the wrist. R5,195
Rope Twisted strands that catch light from every angle. R5,550
Rolo, 3.5mm Even round links. More substantial than it looks. R11,295
Curb, 5.1mm Flattened interlocking links. The strongest everyday bracelet. R13,995
ID bracelet A curb bracelet with a flat plate, ready to engrave. R37,240
Diamond tennis, 18ct A continuous line of diamonds. An occasion piece. R175,200

Charm and personalised styles are made in either silver or 9ct gold, so the prices shown on those run from the silver version upward. Browse them in personalised bracelets.

9ct or 18ct

9ct gold 18ct gold
Pure gold content 37.5% 75%
Hallmark 375 750
Colour Lighter, cooler yellow Deeper, warmer yellow
Hardness Harder, takes knocks better Softer, marks more easily
Best for Daily wear Occasion and diamond settings
Price Lower for the same weight Higher for the same weight

Almost everything in this collection is 9ct, and for a bracelet that is the right call. A bracelet gets knocked far more than a ring or a chain, and 9ct is the harder metal. The 18ct pieces here are the diamond settings, where colour matters more than hardness.

Getting the length right

Measure around your wrist bone with a tape or a strip of paper, then add the gap you want. This is the one measurement worth getting right, because a bracelet that is too tight will not sit flat and one that is too loose will spin.

Wrist measurement Bracelet length How it sits
14cm to 15cm 17cm Close fitting, will not spin
15cm to 16cm 18cm The most common size for women
16cm to 17cm 19cm Comfortable with a little movement
17cm to 19cm 20cm to 21cm Standard for men, and for a looser drape

If you are buying a gift and cannot measure, 18cm suits most women and 20cm most men. We can adjust length on almost every chain bracelet before it ships. Message us and we will sort it.

Choosing a width

Width Feel Wears well with
1.9mm to 2.6mm Fine and light, easy to forget you have it on Stacking, or alongside a watch
3.5mm to 4.4mm Clearly visible, still comfortable all day Worn alone as an everyday piece
5mm to 6.2mm Substantial with real weight A statement on its own

Wider bracelets are heavier and cost proportionally more, because you are buying gold by the gram. If you are unsure, 3.5mm to 4.4mm is the range most people end up happiest with.

Solid or hollow, and how to tell. Hollow gold bracelets look identical and cost far less, because there is air inside the links. They dent, and once dented they cannot be repaired invisibly. Solid gold feels heavier than it looks and takes a knock without deforming. Check the hallmark, 375 or 750, usually stamped near the clasp. If a listing does not state the carat, assume it is plated.

Wearing and caring for a gold bracelet

Gold does not tarnish. It picks up a film from hand cream, soap and skin oils, which dulls the shine without harming the metal. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft brush through the links and a dry cloth brings it back in a couple of minutes.

Take it off for the gym and for swimming pools. Chlorine attacks the alloys mixed into gold and it is harder on jewellery than seawater is. Weights are the other one, because a bracelet caught between a bar and your wrist will bend.

Check the clasp every few months. A worn clasp spring is the single most common way people lose a bracelet, and it costs almost nothing to replace before it fails.

Questions

Are these solid gold bracelets?

Yes. Solid 9ct or 18ct gold, hallmarked 375 or 750. Nothing here is plated. If you want plated at a lower price, that is a separate range, gold plated jewellery.

What length should I choose?

18cm suits most women and 20cm most men. Measure your wrist and use the table above if you want to be precise.

Can I wear a gold bracelet every day?

Yes, and 9ct is made for it. Take it off for the gym and the pool.

Can the length be adjusted?

Yes on almost every chain bracelet. Tell us the length you need when you order and we will adjust it before it ships.

Will it scratch?

Every gold bracelet picks up fine marks with wear. That is normal and it can be polished. 9ct resists it better than 18ct.

Do you make custom bracelets?

Yes. Choose the style, width, length and carat and we make it to order. Start with a custom enquiry and we will quote.
