Mens gold rings South Africa

Solid 9ct gold rings for men, made and finished by Aria Jewellery Palace in Cape Town and delivered insured across South Africa. There are 77 rings here from R1,299 to R27,950, in yellow, white and rose gold, across widths from 2mm to 8mm.

Almost every man buying a gold ring is buying a wedding band, and he is buying the one piece of jewellery he will wear every day for the rest of his life. That changes the questions worth asking. Not which one looks best in a photograph, but which width he will forget he is wearing, which fit slides over a knuckle, and which finish still looks right after ten years of contact with a steering wheel.

This page answers those in order. If you are still choosing metals, compare against mens titanium rings, mens tungsten rings and mens sterling silver rings, or start from the full mens wedding rings collection of 118 rings.

Gold band prices by width and fit

Gold is sold by weight, so width drives the price more than anything else. A 6mm band uses roughly three times the gold of a 2mm band in the same profile. This table is the single most useful thing on the page.

Width Light comfort fit Supreme fit
2mm R3,450 R4,110
3mm R5,010 R6,150
4mm R6,080 R9,520
5mm R9,260 R14,600
6mm R10,710 R20,450

White gold runs within a few hundred rand of yellow at every width. The 2mm white gold light comfort fit is R3,230, the 5mm is R8,470, and the 6mm white gold supreme fit is R20,805.

Read the two columns against each other before you choose. At 2mm the difference between the fits is R660. At 6mm it is nearly R10,000, because supreme fit is a heavier band carrying far more gold. If the budget is fixed, a wider light comfort fit will look more substantial on the hand than a narrower supreme fit at the same price.

Light comfort fit, comfort fit and supreme fit

These are the three weights Aria makes, and the names describe how much gold is in the band rather than how it looks from above.

Fit What it is Feels like
Light comfort fit A domed inside surface with a lighter wall of gold The easiest to wear all day and the best value per millimetre of width
Comfort fit The standard domed profile in a medium weight The middle ground, and the most common choice
Supreme fit The same domed inside with a much heavier wall Noticeably solid in the hand. The band that feels expensive because it is

Every one of these is domed on the inside rather than flat, which is what comfort fit actually means. The dome slides over a knuckle more easily and touches less skin, so the ring feels looser than a flat band of the same size. That is also why a comfort fit usually measures about half a size differently to a flat band, and why you should never take a size from an old ring and assume it transfers.

Yellow, white or rose gold

Metal How it reads Worth knowing
Yellow gold The traditional wedding band. Warm and unmistakably gold Hides scratches and everyday wear better than the other two
White gold Cool and modern, and it sits well with a steel watch Rhodium plated for brightness, so it needs replating every few years to stay crisp
Rose gold Warm with a copper tone. Less common on men, which is the appeal The hardest of the three golds, thanks to the copper in the alloy

All three hold the same gold content at 9ct, so they cost within a few percent of each other. Choose on colour and on what he already wears. A man with a yellow gold watch should not be given a white gold band, and a man who wears nothing but steel usually finds white gold easier to start with. The 9ct Rose Gold Comfort Fit Band in 4mm at R8,100 is the rose gold entry point.

Finishes and edges

Finish is what separates two bands of identical width and weight, and it is where most of the personality sits.

Finish What it looks like Example
Polished Mirror bright. The classic, and the easiest to re-polish later Polished Bevelled Edge 6mm, R15,710
Satin or brushed A soft matte surface that hides fine scratches Bevel Edge Satin 5mm, R12,390
Bevel edge The edges are cut back at an angle, so the band reads narrower than it is Bevel Edge Satin 4mm, R9,845
Satin centre, polished rim Two finishes on one band, matte through the middle with bright edges Satin Centre and Polished Rim 5mm, R15,050
Centred groove A single channel cut around the band Centred Groove Satin 5mm, R16,040
Milgrain A fine beaded edge, the detail that reads as traditional and hand finished Double Milgrain Polished 6mm, R22,520
Two tone Yellow gold with a white gold rim, or gold with silver Satin Centre with White Gold Rim, R16,730
Inlay A recessed band of contrasting metal set into the surface Inlay Satin Finish 6mm, R22,500

Satin is the practical choice for a man who works with his hands, because it wears into itself rather than showing every mark. Polished looks sharper on day one and needs a polish every few years to keep looking that way. Both are the same metal underneath, so this is a preference rather than a durability decision.

The African ring collection

This is the part of the collection you will not find at a chain store. Aria makes a range of 9ct gold and silver rings carrying South African pattern work, and they are the rings men choose when a plain band feels like it says nothing.

Ring Pattern Price
African Ring, Weave, gold tone A woven texture across the full width R10,830
African Ring, Chevron Repeating chevrons, the most graphic of the set R11,145
African Ring, Braid A braided rope pattern R11,670
African Ring, Crosshatch Fine crossed lines, subtle at arm’s length R11,670
African Ring, Leopard Leopard markings worked into the metal R11,865
African Ring, Zebra Zebra stripe, high contrast between the two metals R11,865
African Ring, Giraffe Giraffe patterning R11,865
African Ring, Crocodile Crocodile skin texture, the most tactile of the set R11,865
African Ring, Khaya Spiral A spiral drawn from the khaya tree R11,865
African Ring, Weave The full weave in gold and silver R12,795
Solid Gold African Ring, 4mm The same design language in solid 9ct gold throughout R17,505
Solid Gold African Ring, Cross Weave Cross weave, solid gold R17,505

The gold and silver versions pair 9ct gold with silver, which is what keeps a 6mm patterned ring near R11,000 instead of double that. The two solid gold versions are the same idea without the silver.

Diamond set gold bands

A diamond in a man’s band is set flush or channelled rather than raised, so there is nothing to catch and nothing to knock loose.

Band Metal Price
Modern Diamond Band, 4mm 9ct yellow gold R12,190
Gold and Diamond Modern Band 9ct yellow gold R12,460
Modern Diamond Band, 4mm 9ct white gold R13,195
Diamond and Black Fill Band, 4mm 9ct yellow gold with black fill R13,480
Diamond and Black Fill Band, 6mm 9ct yellow gold with black fill R20,515
Modern Diamond Band, 6mm 9ct yellow gold R21,225

If diamonds are the point rather than the detail, the same stones sit in Aria’s lab grown diamond engagement rings and natural diamond engagement rings.

Gold and silver combination bands

These pair 9ct gold with silver in one band, which brings a gold ring within reach at half the price of a solid one. They start at R5,140 for the Flat Brushed 4mm and R5,375 for the Rose Gold Inlay 6mm.

Above them sit the domed versions: Rose Gold Domed Brushed with Rim at R7,675, Luxury Fit Milgrain Inlay at R7,990, Yellow Gold Domed Polished at R8,055 and Yellow Gold Domed Brushed at R8,935.

Aria also uses argentium, a tarnish resistant silver alloy, in the same way. The Argentium and Gold Mens Band at R6,095 and the 9ct Yellow Gold and Argentium Brushed and Milgrain 6mm at R8,250 are both in this group.

The cheapest way into a gold ring

Two rings on this page carry real 9ct gold on a titanium base, which is how you get gold on the hand under R3,000. The Titanium with Single Band 9ct Gold Inlay, 7mm is R2,510 and the Titanium with 9ct Gold Inlay, 7mm is R2,790.

Be clear about the trade before you buy one. The gold is real and the titanium is tougher than gold, but a titanium ring cannot be resized. If his fingers change over twenty years, and most men’s do, the ring is replaced rather than adjusted. A solid gold band can be altered as often as it needs to be.

Gold can be resized. That is the quiet argument for it. A 9ct gold band can be cut, sized up or down, soldered and re-polished, and nobody will see where the work was done. Titanium and tungsten cannot, because they are too hard to work that way. Fingers change with age, weight, heat and work, so a ring bought at 30 is rarely the right size at 50. Measure at the end of a normal day when fingers are largest, never in cold weather, and remember that a wider band needs a slightly larger size than a narrow one in the same fit.

Choosing a width

Width How it wears Suits
2mm to 3mm Light, and forgotten within a week Slim fingers, office work, and anyone who has never worn a ring
4mm to 5mm The standard men’s band. Visible without getting in the way Most men, most hands
6mm Substantial and deliberate Larger hands, and men who want the ring noticed
7mm to 8mm A statement, and heavy in gold Broad fingers, and a budget to match, since gold is priced by weight

If he has never worn a ring, go narrower than you think. The most common regret is a band that felt right in a shop and feels enormous by week three.

9ct against 18ct

9ct gold 18ct gold
Pure gold content 37.5% 75%
Hallmark 375 750
Colour Lighter, cooler yellow Deeper, richer yellow
Hardness Harder, resists knocks and scratches better Softer, marks and bends more easily
Price for the same band Lower Roughly double

Aria builds men’s bands in 9ct for a reason. A man’s wedding ring takes more physical contact than any other piece of jewellery either partner owns, and 9ct is the harder alloy. If he wants 18ct for the colour, it can be made, and it will cost about twice as much for the same width.

Engraving

Almost every band here can be engraved on the inside with a date, initials or a short line. It costs a fraction of moving up a width and it is the detail people mention decades later.

Do it at the time of making where you can. Engraving a plain gold band later is straightforward, but engraving a titanium or tungsten ring after the fact usually is not. For engraved pieces beyond wedding bands, see personalised jewellery and personalised rings.

Matching her ring

If both bands are being bought together, order them from the same workshop and say so up front. Two rings made side by side match in colour and finish, and hers can be cut to sit flush against her engagement ring rather than fighting it across the finger.

Her band sits in wedding rings and the engagement rings sit in engagement rings. For the full walkthrough on his side of the decision, read the mens wedding rings South Africa guide.

What men actually regret

After twenty years of fitting these, the same three regrets come up, and all of them are avoidable.

The first is buying too wide. A 6mm band feels impressive on the hand in a shop and enormous by the third week at a desk. If he is unsure, order the narrower width. Nobody has ever come back asking for a heavier ring because the first one was too comfortable.

The second is buying the wrong metal for how he lives. A man on a building site or in a workshop should not be in a high polish band, because it will look scratched within a month and he will stop wearing it. Satin, or a harder metal, keeps its face.

The third is timing. Wedding bands get left until the fortnight before the wedding, and made to order pieces need longer than that, particularly if the band is engraved or sized unusually. Order two months out and the whole thing becomes a non-event.

One more worth knowing. Fingers swell in Cape Town summer heat and shrink in a Highveld winter, so a band that fits in December can feel tight in January. That is normal, and it is another argument for gold over the metals that cannot be adjusted.

Caring for a gold band

Gold does not tarnish, so almost everything that dulls a ring is film rather than damage.

Do this Why it matters How often
Wash it in warm water with mild soap and a soft brush Soap and skin oil build up under and inside the band Monthly
Take it off for weights and heavy lifting A bar against a ring is how gold bands bend out of round Every time
Keep it out of the pool Chlorine attacks the alloys mixed into gold Every time
Have white gold replated Rhodium wears off and the band starts to look yellowish underneath Every few years
Have it checked and re-polished Scratches come out and thinning is spotted before it becomes a crack Every few years

Questions

How much is a mens gold ring in South Africa?

Solid 9ct bands start at R3,230 for a 2mm white gold light comfort fit and run to R27,950 at the top of this collection. Gold and silver combination bands start at R5,140, and titanium with gold inlay starts at R2,510.

Is 9ct gold real gold?

Yes. It is 37.5 percent pure gold alloyed for strength and hallmarked 375. It is also harder than 18ct, which is why it suits a ring worn every day.

What width wedding band should he choose?

4mm to 5mm suits most men. Go narrower if he has never worn a ring, wider only if he has larger hands or already wears something substantial.

What is comfort fit?

The inside of the band is domed rather than flat, so it slides over the knuckle more easily and touches less skin. It usually measures about half a size differently to a flat band.

What is the difference between light comfort fit and supreme fit?

Weight. Both are domed inside, but supreme fit carries a much heavier wall of gold. At 6mm that difference is nearly R10,000, and you can feel it in the hand.

Can a gold ring be resized?

Yes, up or down, as many times as it needs. That is the main practical advantage gold has over titanium and tungsten, neither of which can be resized at all.

Yellow, white or rose gold for a man?

Match what he already wears, starting with his watch. Yellow hides wear best, white suits a steel wardrobe and needs replating every few years, rose is the hardest and the least common.

Does white gold turn yellow?

The rhodium plating wears off over a few years and the alloy underneath reads slightly warm. Replating restores it and is a routine job.

Can the ring be engraved?

Yes, inside, with a date, initials or a short line. Ask at the time of ordering, since it is easiest before the band is finished.

What are the African rings made of?

9ct gold and silver together, in patterns including leopard, zebra, giraffe, crocodile, weave and khaya spiral, from R10,830. Two versions are made in solid 9ct gold throughout at R17,505.

Will a satin finish stay matte?

It softens with wear and can be re-satined at any time. Satin hides everyday scratches better than polished, which is why it suits men who work with their hands.

How do I find his ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring he already wears on that finger and send us the inside measurement. Tell us the width you are considering too, because a wide band needs a slightly larger size than a narrow one.

What if the size is wrong when it arrives?

A gold band gets resized. Get in touch and it will be sorted.

Can you make his and hers bands to match?

Yes, and ordering both together is the only way to be sure they match in colour and finish. Hers sits in wedding rings.

Do you make custom mens rings?

Yes. Aria makes jewellery by hand in Cape Town, so send a photo or a sketch on WhatsApp and it can be quoted and made in the width, metal and finish you want.

Do you deliver nationwide?

Yes, free and insured, anywhere in South Africa, tracked from our Cape Town workshop.
