Gold earrings in South Africa
Part of the gold jewellery collection at Aria Jewellery. Solid 9ct and 18ct gold earrings, hallmarked and never plated, made in Cape Town and delivered nationwide.
Sixty-one pairs, from 4mm gold studs at R1,295 to 18ct gold tanzanite studs at R81,880. Every pair is solid gold, which matters more on earrings than on anything else you own, because plated posts sit against skin all day and are the most common cause of irritation.
Shop by style: studs, hoops, huggies or drops.
Gold earring prices by style
| Style | What it is | From |
|---|---|---|
| Studs | Sit flat on the lobe. The everyday starting point. | R1,295 |
| Hoops | Round, from 10mm through to 60mm. The most versatile. | R1,450 |
| Creoles | A thicker hoop that tapers. Sits close to the ear. | R2,495 |
| Drops | Hang below the lobe with movement. | R2,995 |
| Teardrops | A shaped stud or short drop, 6mm upward. | R3,795 |
| Huggies | Small hinged hoops that sit tight to the lobe. | R3,895 |
| Flat back | A flat post rather than a butterfly. Best for sleeping in. | R7,295 |
| Lab diamond | 9ct yellow, white or rose gold set with lab-grown diamonds. | R9,950 |
| Tanzanite studs, 18ct | 18ct gold set with tanzanite. An occasion piece. | R19,990 |
Prices rise with gold weight, so a 50mm hoop costs several times a 15mm one in the same design.
Choosing a hoop size
Hoop diameter changes the look far more than the metal does. We make them from 10mm to 60mm.
| Diameter | How it reads | Wears well for |
|---|---|---|
| 10mm to 15mm | Small and neat, sits close to the lobe | Every day, work, sleeping in |
| 20mm to 30mm | Visible without being loud | The most popular range, day to evening |
| 40mm to 50mm | A clear statement | Evening, and worn with hair up |
| 60mm | Large and deliberate | Occasion wear |
If you are buying a first pair of gold hoops, 15mm to 20mm is the size most people wear most often.
Studs, huggies and drops
| Style | Best for | Fastening |
|---|---|---|
| Stud | Daily wear, under a helmet or headphones, second piercings | Butterfly back, or flat back for sleeping |
| Huggie | A permanent everyday earring, stacking with other piercings | Hinged, clicks shut, hard to lose |
| Drop | Evening and occasion, adds movement | Hook or post |
| Creole | A softer alternative to a plain hoop | Hinged or post |
Huggies are the most practical earring we sell. They hinge shut rather than relying on a butterfly back, which is the part people lose.
9ct or 18ct, and what the hallmark means
| 9ct gold | 18ct gold | |
|---|---|---|
| Pure gold content | 37.5% | 75% |
| Hallmark | 375 | 750 |
| Colour | Lighter, cooler yellow | Deeper, warmer yellow |
| Hardness | Harder, better for thin posts | Softer, richer colour |
| Best for | Everyday earrings | Stone settings and occasion pieces |
| Price | Lower for the same weight | Higher for the same weight |
Most of this collection is 9ct, which is the right choice for earrings worn daily. The 18ct pieces here are the tanzanite settings, where colour matters more than hardness.
Real gold or plated, and why it matters more on earrings. A plated earring has base metal under a thin gold layer, and the post is the part that wears through first because it sits in the piercing. That is where nickel reactions come from. Solid gold has no base metal to expose. Look for the hallmark, 375 or 750, on the post or the butterfly. If a listing does not state the carat, assume it is plated.

Wearing and caring for gold earrings
Gold does not tarnish. Earrings pick up a film of skin oil, hairspray and perfume faster than any other piece, because they sit near your hairline. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush and a dry cloth clears it.
Clean the posts and backs as well as the fronts. That is where build up actually causes problems, and it takes ten seconds.
Take hoops out for the gym and for sleeping, unless they are flat backs or huggies, which are designed to stay in. A hoop caught in bedding or a jumper is the most common way earrings bend.
Store them in pairs rather than loose. Butterfly backs are the single most lost part of any earring.

Questions
Are these solid gold earrings?
Yes. Solid 9ct or 18ct gold, hallmarked 375 or 750. Nothing here is plated. If you want plated at a lower price, that is a separate range, gold plated earrings.
Will gold earrings irritate my ears?
Solid gold rarely does, because there is no base metal against the piercing. Reactions are usually to the nickel in plated or costume earrings.
What hoop size should I choose?
15mm to 20mm is what most people wear most often. Go to 40mm or 50mm if you want a statement. See the size table above.
Can I sleep in them?
Flat back studs and huggies are made for it. Hoops and drops should come out, since they bend if they catch.
What is a huggie?
A small hinged hoop that clicks shut around the lobe. There is no butterfly back to lose, which is why they suit everyday wear.
