Price follows the gold weight and the stones. A wider band in the same design costs more because it uses more metal.

Getting your ring size right

This is the one thing worth taking time over, because a ring is the hardest piece to judge by eye.

Measure when your hands are warm, at the end of the day. Fingers are noticeably smaller first thing in the morning and in cold weather, which is how people end up with a ring that spins. If you are between sizes, go up, particularly on a wide band, because a wide ring wears tighter than a narrow one of the same size.

Choosing a metal colour

All three are the same price at the same carat, because the gold content is identical. White gold is the only one with a maintenance cost attached, and re-plating is inexpensive.

Wearing and caring for a gold ring

Gold does not tarnish. Rings dull faster than any other piece because soap, hand cream and cooking oil collect behind the stones and in the setting. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, paying attention to the underside of the stone, brings the sparkle straight back.

Take rings off for the gym, for gardening and for anything involving a chemical. Weights are the main cause of bent bands, and chlorine attacks the alloys mixed into gold.

Have claw settings checked once a year if the ring holds a stone. A claw that has worn thin is the reason stones get lost, and tightening one costs almost nothing.

White gold needs re-plating every few years as the rhodium wears. That is normal, not a fault.
