A bangle is the one piece of jewellery that has to be right first time. Unlike a bracelet it has no clasp to adjust, so it either passes over your hand or it does not. Getting the diameter right matters more than anything else on this page, and there is a measuring guide below.

Price follows weight and metal. A solid bangle uses several times the metal of a hinged one at the same width, which is why the gap is wide.

Getting the size right

This is the part people get wrong. A bangle has to clear the widest part of your hand, not your wrist. Press your thumb into your palm as if putting a bangle on, then measure around the widest point of your hand with a tape. That number, not your wrist measurement, is what decides the size.

If your hand measurement sits between two sizes, go up. A bangle that will not pass over your knuckle is unwearable, while one that is slightly loose still sits correctly. If you cannot measure, or you are buying a gift, a hinged bangle removes the problem entirely because it opens.

Solid or hinged

If you plan to put it on and leave it on, choose solid. If it is a gift, or you take jewellery off daily, choose hinged.

Wearing and caring for a bangle

A bangle knocks against desks, car doors and keyboards all day, which is normal and is what the metal is made for. Fine surface marks are wear, not damage, and both gold and silver polish back.

Silver darkens over time. That is oxidation on the surface, not the metal failing. A silver cloth brings it back in a minute, and storing it dry and sealed slows it down.

Take a bangle off for the gym. A bangle caught between a bar and your wrist bends out of round, and once out of round it will not sit flat again without being reshaped.

Warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth is all either metal needs.
