Gold chains for men South Africa
A gold chain is the biggest single jewellery purchase most men ever make. Our men's chains run from R620 for a stainless steel figaro to R228,950 for a hollow 18ct curb at 8.2mm. The gold starts properly at R5,595 for a fine 9ct infinity chain and the serious pieces sit between R20,000 and R85,000.
Those numbers frighten people until they understand what drives them. It is weight, and nothing else matters nearly as much. A chain is priced by how many grams of gold are in it, then by the work involved in linking them. Everything on this page exists to help you spend that money once and spend it correctly.
We make and stock at our workshop in Table View, Cape Town, and ship nationwide with tracking and insurance on high value orders. You can see the full men's chains range of 20 pieces, or the wider gold chains category which holds 58 chains across men's and women's weights. If you are still deciding on metal at all, start with the men's jewellery collection, which covers 216 pieces.
Why width doubles but price quadruples
This is the single most useful thing on this page and almost nobody explains it. Gold chains are sold by width in millimetres, so buyers assume a 6mm chain costs about half again what a 3mm costs. It does not. It costs roughly four times as much.
The reason is geometry. A chain link is a three dimensional object. When you double the width, you also double the thickness of the wire and the depth of the link. The metal in it grows with the square of the width, not in a straight line. Double the width, quadruple the gold, quadruple the price.
| Chain | Width | Price here | What the jump shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9ct Gold Infinity Chain | 1.75mm | R5,595 | The entry point for solid 9ct |
| 9ct Gold Marina Curb Chain | 2.6mm | From R18,250 | Under double the width, over triple the price |
| 9ct Gold Figaro Chain | 4.4mm | R20,990 on sale | Wider still, and length starts to bite |
| Figaro Chain 9ct Gold | 5.2mm | From R27,520 | The point where a chain reads as substantial |
| 9ct Gold Figaro Chain | 7.5mm | R49,250 on sale | Heavy figaro for a broader frame |
| 5mm Mens Gold Rope Chain | 5mm | From R49,650 | Rope packs more gold per millimetre than figaro |
| Hollow 18ct Gold Curb Chain | 8.2mm | From R215,850 | 18ct is 750 parts gold against 375, so it doubles again |
Two things follow from this. First, going up one millimetre in width costs far more than you expect, so decide your width before you fall in love with a picture. Second, length matters almost as much as width. A 65cm chain holds close to 20 percent more gold than a 55cm chain of identical width. That is why the same chain appears at two prices on our site depending on the length you choose.
The rope chain is worth a note. Rope construction twists the metal, so a 5mm rope contains more gold than a 5mm figaro of the same length. If you want maximum presence per rand, figaro is the efficient choice. If you want maximum weight and density, rope is.
How wide should a man's chain be
Width is the decision that determines whether you wear the chain or leave it in a drawer. The commonest mistake is buying too wide because it looked right in a photograph on someone with a different build.
| Width | How it reads | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5mm to 2mm | Barely visible, sits flat, disappears under a shirt | A first gold chain, a chain bought to carry a pendant, office wear |
| 2.5mm to 3.5mm | Clearly visible at conversation distance | Most men, most of the time. The safest choice by a distance |
| 4mm to 5mm | Reads as a deliberate piece of jewellery | Broader builds, men who already wear a chain and are upgrading |
| 6mm to 8mm | The first thing anyone notices | Large frames, and men who want it seen |
| Over 8mm | Statement, and heavy on the neck all day | Very few. Try one on before you commit |
Build matters more than height. A chain that suits a man with a 44 chest looks undersized on a man with a 52 chest and oversized on a slim frame. If you have a broad neck and shoulders, go a step wider than you think. If you are lean, go narrower. The chain should sit in proportion to the space it occupies, not to the price you paid.
Practical test. Wear a shoelace or a piece of cord at the width you are considering for an afternoon. If you keep noticing it, it is too wide for daily wear and belongs in the occasion category.
Length, and how to measure it properly
Men buy chains too short more often than too long. The reason is that most online size charts are written for women and start at 45cm, which sits at the base of a woman's throat and halfway up a man's.
| Length | Where it sits on a man | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 50cm | Tight at the base of the neck | Slim builds only, or a deliberate choker look |
| 55cm | Just below the collarbone | The standard men's length. Visible with an open collar |
| 60cm | Top of the chest | Larger builds, or a chain worn with a pendant |
| 65cm | Mid chest | Broad frames, heavy chains, dog tags |
| 70cm and over | Below the sternum | Worn outside a shirt, statement only |
Measure it yourself in two minutes. Take a piece of string, hold it around your neck where you want the chain to sit, mark the point where the ends meet, then measure the string against a tape. That number is your length. Add 5cm if the chain will carry a pendant, because a pendant pulls the chain down and forward.
Neck size gives you a starting point too. If your collar size is 15 to 16 inches, 55cm works. At 17 to 18 inches, go to 60cm. Above that, 65cm. This is rough, but it is closer than guessing from a photograph.
Solid or hollow, and the honest trade
A solid chain is gold all the way through. A hollow chain has the same outer profile with a cavity inside, so it looks identical and weighs a fraction as much. The Hollow 18ct Gold Curb Chain at 8.2mm is our example. At 8.2mm in solid 18ct, the same chain would be unwearable in weight and roughly double the price it already carries.
Hollow gives you presence you could not otherwise afford or physically carry. That is a real benefit and we sell hollow deliberately. The cost is durability. A hollow link dents if it is crushed, and a dented hollow link is difficult to repair invisibly because there is nothing behind the wall to solder to. A solid link can be cut, reshaped and resoldered almost indefinitely.
So the rule is straightforward. If you want a wide chain and you will wear it carefully, hollow is a sensible way to get there. If you want a chain you will wear every day for thirty years and hand to your son, buy solid, and buy narrower to stay in budget. A solid 3mm outlives a hollow 8mm by decades.
Always ask which one you are looking at. We say so in the product name. Not every seller does, and the price difference between a solid and a hollow chain of identical appearance can be four to one.
Clasps, and where a heavy chain actually fails
Chains almost never break in the middle. They fail at the clasp, or at the jump ring that connects the clasp to the chain, because that is the smallest piece of metal carrying the whole load.
| Clasp | Strength | Right for |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt ring, the small spring circle | Weakest | Fine chains under 2mm only |
| Lobster clasp | Good | Most chains from 2mm to 5mm |
| Oversized lobster | Strong | Heavy chains from 5mm up |
| Box clasp with a side catch | Strongest | Wide curb chains, and anything you will not take off daily |
| Barrel or screw clasp | Strong but fiddly | Men who rarely remove the chain |
If you are buying a chain over 5mm and it comes on a standard lobster, ask us to fit an oversized clasp or a box clasp. It is a small job and it is the difference between a chain you own and a chain you lose. On the R49,000 and R77,000 pieces we do it as a matter of course unless you tell us otherwise.
Check your clasp every few months. Open it and look at the spring. If it closes slowly or feels soft, it is worn. A new clasp costs very little compared to a chain on a pavement.
Chain styles men actually wear
Four styles cover almost everything sold to men, and each behaves differently on the neck.
Figaro alternates long links with short ones, which breaks up the pattern and stops the chain reading as a solid band. It is the most popular men's style in South Africa by a wide margin, which is why we stock it at 4.4mm, 5.2mm, 6.2mm and 7.5mm. It sits flat and it does not twist.
Curb has flattened, twisted links that lie against the skin. It is the heaviest looking style for its width and the one most associated with a classic gold chain. Our 9ct Gold Marina Curb Chain at 2.6mm from R18,250 is the wearable version. The 8.2mm 18ct hollow curb is the extreme.
Rope twists strands together into a spiral. It catches light from every angle and it is dense, so it feels substantial in the hand. The 5mm Mens Gold Rope Chain from R49,650 is cut heavier and longer than a women's rope of the same width.
Infinity and cable styles are the fine end. The 9ct Gold Infinity Chain at 1.75mm, R5,595 and the 5 Station 9ct Gold Infinity Necklace at R7,995 are the chains men buy to carry a pendant rather than to be seen on their own.
For the full picture across both men's and women's weights, the gold chains and necklaces range and the broader chains and necklaces category are worth browsing.
Chains that carry something
Plenty of men buy a chain as a delivery system for a pendant rather than as jewellery in its own right. That changes what you should buy.
The Personalised Dog Tag Necklace, R1,995 to R13,875, and the Dog Tag Lords Prayer Necklace, R2,295 to R12,495, are our steadiest sellers in this group. Both are engraved, both come in silver through to gold, and both suit a wider chain because the tag needs a chain that can visually carry it. The Personalised Dog Tag Chain from R6,750 pairs the two.
The Gold Rosary Necklace at R9,990 and the Compass Necklace With Diamond, R2,950 to R13,500 serve different buyers entirely. Religious pieces and travel pieces both sell well as farewell and graduation gifts.
If you want to choose the pendant separately, browse gold pendants or the full pendants range, then match the chain to the weight of what you have picked. A heavy pendant on a fine chain stretches the chain at the load point and eventually snaps it there. For engraved and custom work, our personalised jewellery and personalised necklaces ranges cover names, dates and initials.
The entry route, if R20,000 is not where you are starting
Most men do not begin with a R50,000 chain, and there is no reason to. There is a sensible ladder.
The Stainless Steel Figaro Chain at 7mm, R620 tells you whether you like wearing a chain at all, and whether 7mm suits your build, for the price of a dinner. It will not last a lifetime and it is not meant to.
Next, silver. The Mens 7mm Silver Figaro Chain, R2,995 to R3,795 gives you a real precious metal chain at full men's width. The 10mm Silver Curb Chain at 55cm, R6,895 and the 16mm Silver Curb Chain from R9,495 go further than most men will ever go in gold, because silver at that width is affordable and gold is not. Browse the sterling silver chains range for the full set.
Then gold, starting fine and going heavier over the years. This is how most of our long term customers got where they are. They bought a 2mm at thirty and a 5mm at forty five. Nobody buys the 7.5mm figaro first.
Wearing gold in South Africa, practically
You should think about this before you spend R50,000, and most jewellers will not raise it with you.
Wear a heavy chain under your shirt in public. That is not fear, it is the same logic as not leaving a laptop on a car seat. Gold under a collar is invisible and you still know it is there. Bring it out where it makes sense, at an event, at a braai, among people you know.
Get a valuation certificate. We issue one on request with any significant purchase, and your insurer will want it. Without a valuation, an insurance claim gets settled on whatever the assessor decides, which is rarely what you paid. Photograph the chain on a plain background and keep the photo with the certificate and the invoice.
Insure it specifically. Most household policies cap jewellery at a low figure unless you list items individually. Ask your broker what your unspecified limit is. On a R50,000 chain that one phone call is the whole difference between covered and not.
Take it off for contact sport and for the gym. A chain caught in a machine or grabbed in a tackle does damage to your neck, not just to the chain.
Gold as something you get back
A gold chain is jewellery, and it is also gold. That second part is worth being clear about, without overselling it.
If you ever sell a chain, you are paid on scrap weight and carat, not on what you paid. The making, the design and the retail margin do not come back. On a 9ct chain, 37.5 percent of the weight is gold and the rest is alloy, so the scrap figure is a fraction of the retail price. That is true everywhere, from us and from anyone else.
What it does mean is that a solid gold chain has a floor under it that a plated chain, a steel chain or a fashion piece does not. It never becomes worthless. And when gold prices rise, that floor rises with them. We take old and broken gold against a purchase, so a chain you tire of can become part of the next one rather than sitting in a drawer.
The practical version of this. Buy solid rather than plated if the money is meaningful to you. Buy the width you will actually wear rather than the width that impresses in a photograph. And keep the invoice, because provenance affects what you are offered when you trade up.
Repairs, shortening and remaking
Gold chains are repairable, and heavy gold chains are worth repairing every time. Our workshop resolders broken links, replaces worn clasps and jump rings, shortens chains that sit too long and lengthens them by adding matched links.
Shortening a chain returns gold to you. If we take 8cm out of a 65cm chain, those links are yours, and we either credit the gold or keep it aside for you. Not every jeweller mentions this. Ask about it wherever you go.
We also rebuild. If you have a chain from your father that has broken in three places, bring it in. Rebuilding an old chain usually costs a fraction of replacing it and you keep the piece that matters. The same workshop handles resizing on men's gold rings and clasp work on men's bracelets.
Building the rest of it
A chain is usually the first piece, and there is a sensible order for what follows.
The wrist comes next for most men. Men's bracelets hold 17 pieces, and a bracelet in the same style and metal as your chain reads as intentional. Match the metal exactly. A 9ct chain with a silver bracelet looks like two separate decisions, because it is.
Then rings. Our men's wedding rings range runs to 118 pieces across gold, titanium, tungsten and sterling silver. The men's wedding rings guide covers the metal choice properly.
The rest of the gold range is worth knowing even if you are buying for yourself. Gold rings, gold bracelets, gold bangles, gold earrings and gold anklets all sit in the same gold jewellery collection of 312 pieces. Our gold jewellery guide and gold jewellery Cape Town page cover buying gold generally.
Buying a gold chain as a gift
Buying a chain for a man without asking him is harder than it looks, because width is personal and length depends on his neck.
Two ways to solve it. Measure a chain he already owns while he is not wearing it, both the length and the width, and buy to those numbers. Or buy the chain at a safe middle, 55cm at 3mm, which fits most men and reads as a proper gold chain without being a gamble on style.
If it is wrong when he opens it, we exchange it. Say when you order that it is a gift and we will note it, leave the invoice out of the box and hold the exchange open. That takes the risk out of the decision entirely, and it is the reason most of our gift buyers come back.
Delivery and collection
We ship nationally with a tracked courier. Cape Town orders placed before midday usually arrive the next working day across the northern suburbs, the Atlantic seaboard, the West Coast strip and the southern suburbs. Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban run one to two working days.
High value chains ship insured and require a signature. We will not leave a R50,000 chain at a gate, and we will phone before dispatch on any order above that level to confirm the delivery address is correct and someone will be there.
Collection from the Table View workshop is free and is worth it on a serious purchase. Trying two widths on your own neck settles the question in thirty seconds, where a week of looking at photographs does not. Call 021 554 1717 to arrange it and we will have both out on the counter.
What you are buying. Every gold chain here is solid or hollow 9ct or 18ct gold, hallmarked 375 or 750, and the product name says which. Steel and silver chains are named as steel and silver. We do not use the word gold on its own for anything plated. Valuation certificates are available on request. If a chain arrives and is not what you understood it to be, message us on 061 408 4046 and we will make it right.
Questions Gold Chain For Men South Africa
What width gold chain should a man buy?
Between 2.5mm and 3.5mm suits most men for everyday wear and is the safest first purchase. Go to 4mm or 5mm if you have a broad build or you already wear a chain and want more presence. Above 6mm is a statement and needs the frame to carry it.
What length is a men's gold chain?
Fifty five centimetres is the standard, sitting just below the collarbone. Sixty centimetres suits larger builds or a chain carrying a pendant. Sixty five is for broad frames and heavy chains. Measure with a piece of string around your neck rather than guessing.
Why is a 6mm chain so much more expensive than a 3mm?
Because gold is priced by weight, and weight grows with the square of the width. Doubling the width roughly quadruples the gold in the chain. Length adds to it as well, so a 65cm chain holds around 20 percent more gold than a 55cm of the same width.
Should I buy solid or hollow?
Hollow lets you wear a wide chain at a weight and price you could otherwise not reach. Solid lasts far longer and can be repaired indefinitely. If it is an everyday chain you intend to keep for decades, buy solid and go narrower. If you want width for occasions, hollow is a sensible answer.
Where do gold chains break?
At the clasp or the jump ring joining the clasp to the chain, because that is the smallest piece of metal carrying the load. On any chain over 5mm, ask for an oversized lobster or a box clasp with a side catch. Check the spring every few months and replace it when it feels soft.
What is the difference between figaro, curb and rope?
Figaro alternates long and short links and sits flat without twisting, which is why it is the most popular men's style here. Curb has flattened twisted links and reads heaviest for its width. Rope twists strands into a spiral, catches light from every angle and holds more gold per millimetre than the others.
Is 9ct or 18ct better for a men's chain?
Nine carat is harder and cheaper, which is why nearly every heavy men's chain in South Africa is 9ct. Eighteen carat is richer in colour and roughly double the gold content, so double the price for the same design. For a chain that takes daily knocks, 9ct is the practical choice.
Can I shower and swim in a gold chain?
Showering is fine. Chlorinated pools are not, because chlorine attacks the alloy metals and weakens links and clasps over months. Sea water does no harm to the metal, though surf is a good way to lose a chain. Rinse in fresh water if you forget.
Should I insure a gold chain?
Yes, and specifically. Most household policies cap unspecified jewellery well below the price of a serious chain. Ask us for a valuation certificate, photograph the chain, and list it individually with your broker. That one call is the difference between covered and not.
Can you shorten a chain that is too long?
Yes, and the gold we remove is yours. We either credit it against the job or keep it aside for you. We also lengthen chains by adding matched links, though matching an older chain depends on the style still being available.
Can you fix a broken gold chain?
Almost always. We resolder broken links, replace clasps and jump rings and rebuild chains that have failed in several places. Repairing an inherited chain usually costs a fraction of replacing it, and you keep the piece that actually matters.
What will I get if I sell a gold chain?
Scrap value based on weight and carat, not what you paid. The making and the retail margin do not come back, and on 9ct only 37.5 percent of the weight is gold. It still means solid gold has a floor under it that plated and fashion pieces never have.
Do you take old gold in part payment?
Yes. Bring in broken chains, single earrings and worn pieces and we will weigh them and tell you what they are worth against your purchase. It is the cheapest way to move up a width.
How do I buy a chain as a surprise gift?
Measure one he already owns for length and width and buy to those numbers. If you cannot, 55cm at 3mm fits most men and reads as a proper gold chain. Tell us it is a gift and we will leave the invoice out and hold the exchange open.
What chain do I need for a heavy pendant?
Wider than you think, and 5cm longer than your bare chain length. A pendant pulls the chain down and forward, and a heavy pendant on a fine chain stretches the links at the load point until they break there. Match the chain to the pendant, not to your budget.
Do you deliver high value chains safely?
Yes. They ship insured, tracked and signature required, and we phone before dispatch on the larger orders to confirm the address and that someone will be there. We do not leave valuable parcels at gates.
Can I see chains in person before buying?
Yes, at the workshop in Table View, Cape Town. Call 021 554 1717 and tell us which two you are deciding between and we will have both ready. Thirty seconds on your own neck settles a question that a week of photographs will not.
