9ct Gold Earrings Cape Town

9ct gold earrings Cape Town

9ct gold earrings in Cape Town

Everything above is solid 9ct gold, hallmarked 375, made or stocked at our workshop in Table View. Prices start at R1,295 for a 4mm stud and run up through R2,995 for a twist hoop to R19,950 for the Seed of Life earrings in gold with diamonds. There are 61 gold earrings in the full range and you can see all of them from the link under the grid.

We are a Cape Town business, not a national warehouse with a Cape Town landing page. Orders placed before midday usually reach Blouberg, Milnerton, Century City and the Atlantic seaboard the next working day. You can collect from the workshop and try earrings on before you commit, which matters more with earrings than with anything else we sell, because a hoop that looks perfect on a screen can sit completely wrong against your jaw. The rest of our gold jewellery in Cape Town works the same way.

This page covers the things people actually get wrong when buying gold earrings. Sizes in millimetres. Which back holds and which one loses earrings. What weight does to a lobe over ten years. What salt air and chlorine really do to 9ct gold on this coast. If you want the general national picture instead, read our gold earrings South Africa guide or the 9ct gold earrings South Africa page. If gold is not fixed in your mind yet, the sterling silver earrings range covers the same shapes at a fraction of the price, and the full gold jewellery collection holds 312 pieces across every category we make.

What each price band buys you

Gold earrings are priced on weight first and work second. A pair of earrings is two pieces, so you pay for the gold twice. That is why a gold pendant of similar size often costs less than earrings that look smaller.

PriceWhat you getExamples in stock

The jump from R1,295 to R2,995 is not a jump in quality. Both are the same 9ct gold. It is a jump in how much metal is in your hand and how many hours went into shaping it. A 4mm stud and a patterned hoop are made of the identical alloy.

The same logic runs through everything else we make in gold. A gold chain is priced by its weight and length, a gold ring by the weight of the band and the stones in it, a gold bangle by how solid it is rather than how wide. If you understand the price of a pair of earrings, you understand the price of everything in the gold range. Our gold buying guide takes that further if you want the detail.

Stud sizes, in millimetres

Stud earrings are sold by the diameter of the front face. That number tells you almost everything, and almost nobody checks it before ordering. A 3mm stud and a 6mm stud are the same product category and look nothing alike on an ear.

SizeHow it readsWho it suits
3mmBarely visible from a metre awaySecond and third piercings, cartilage, children
4mmVisible, still discreetDaily wear, first gold studs, school and work
5mmClearly a stud, reads as jewelleryMost adults as an everyday pair
6mmNoticeable across a roomDress wear, or an everyday pair for someone who wears nothing else
8mm and overStatementOccasions, photography, evening

To picture it properly, hold a ruler up to your ear in a mirror. Six millimetres is roughly the width of a pencil. Most people who order 6mm expecting subtle are surprised, and most people who order 3mm expecting visible are disappointed. Our 9ct Gold Stud Earrings at 4mm, R1,295 sit at the size that suits the widest range of people, which is why they are the first pair most customers buy.

If you are not certain what size you want, buy the size in silver first and live with it for a month. Sterling silver earrings start at R150 here, so a test pair costs less than a takeaway. Once you know your size, come back and buy it in gold. We would rather sell you the right pair second than the wrong pair first.

Hoop diameter, and how it changes your face

Hoops are measured across the outside of the circle. A small change in that number changes the whole look, because a hoop sits against your jawline and your jaw does not scale with the earring.

DiameterWhere it sitsBest for
10mm and underHugs the lobe, barely swingsWork, sleeping in, sport, cartilage piercings
12mm to 15mmJust below the lobeEveryday wear that still reads as a hoop
20mm to 25mmLevel with the jawThe classic hoop look, suits most face shapes
30mm to 40mmBelow the jawlineEvening, occasions, taller and longer faces
Over 50mmReaches the shoulder lineStatement only, not for daily wear

Two practical points. A wide hoop looks bigger than a thin hoop of the same diameter, so a chunky 20mm reads like a fine 25mm. And a hoop with a pattern or a twist catches more light than a plain one, which again makes it read larger. The 9k Gold Twist Hoop Earrings at R2,995 and Pattern 9k Gold Hoop Earrings at R2,795 both use this. If you want maximum presence for the money, texture beats size.

Hoops in the 30mm and up range get heavy in gold, and heavy is expensive. This is the one place where gold plated earrings earn their keep, because a large statement hoop worn a few times a year does not need to be solid gold. We sell both and we will tell you which one your budget actually wants. For a hoop you will wear every day, buy solid and buy small. For a hoop you will wear to three events a year, plated is a sensible answer.

Huggies, creoles and what the names mean

The vocabulary confuses people, and it is not helped by the fact that every shop uses the words slightly differently. Here is what we mean by them.

A huggie is a very small hoop that sits tight against the lobe with almost no gap. It usually closes with a hinge and a click rather than a wire through the ear. Huggies are the most secure earring style there is and they suit people who lose earrings. Our Gold Contemporary Square Huggies at R7,995 and Cube Huggies from R10,320 are the heavier end of this, where the huggie becomes the whole piece rather than a subtle option.

A creole is a hoop that is thicker at the bottom than the top, so it tapers. The shape throws more light at the widest point and sits with a slight forward lean. The Gold Faceted Creole Hoop Earrings from R2,495 add cut faces to that taper, which is why they sparkle without carrying a single stone.

A drop hangs below the lobe from a fixed point. A dangle moves freely as you move. The difference matters if you have long hair or wear scarves, because a dangle catches and a drop mostly does not. Our 9k Gold Drop Earrings at R7,295 and Dangle 9ct Gold Teardrop Earrings at R3,995 sit either side of that line.

Earring backs, and why people lose earrings

Almost every lost earring is a back that failed, not an earring that broke. Choosing the right back is the single most useful thing on this page.

Back typeHow secureTrade off
Butterfly, the standard push-onModerate, loosens over timeCheap, easy, but the commonest way to lose a stud
Screw backHighSlow to put on, and the thread wears if you cross-thread it
Hinged huggieVery highOnly works on small hoops
Latch back or lever backVery highAdds weight and cost, best on drops
Wire or shepherd hookLowEasy on and off, falls out in a jersey
Silicone disc over a butterflyAdds grip cheaplyPerishes and needs replacing yearly

A butterfly back has two small wings that grip the post through friction. That grip weakens every time you take the earring off. If a butterfly slides on with no resistance, it is worn out. Bring the pair in and we will fit new backs, which costs very little and is far cheaper than replacing a single lost earring.

For expensive pairs, ask us to fit screw backs or latch backs instead. On the diamond set pieces we recommend it as a matter of course. Losing one of a R9,950 pair is not a small problem, and single earrings cannot usually be replaced from stock because they are made in pairs.

This is also worth knowing before you buy silver. The backs on silver earrings wear the same way and at the same rate, and a silver butterfly is softer than a gold one, so it loosens sooner. Whatever metal you buy, check the back once a month by trying to pull it off with light pressure. If it slides, replace it.

Weight, and what happens to a lobe over ten years

Nobody warns you about this and it is the thing people most regret. A heavy earring worn daily will slowly stretch the piercing hole downward. It takes years, and by the time you notice it, the hole is an oval rather than a circle and the earring sits at an angle.

Gold is dense, so gold earrings weigh more than they look. A large gold hoop can weigh several times what a comparable silver one does. That is a good thing for value and a bad thing for a lobe worn every day for a decade.

How to avoid it. Keep your heavy pairs for occasions and wear light studs the rest of the time. Vary what you wear rather than leaving one pair in permanently. If a piercing is already stretched, switch to a latch back or a huggie, which spreads the weight along the lobe instead of hanging it from one point. And if a hole has become a slot rather than a circle, stop wearing anything heavy in it and speak to a professional, because at that stage it usually will not close on its own.

This is also why the R1,295 studs outsell everything else here. A light solid gold stud can be worn every day for thirty years and do no damage at all.

Silver is lighter than gold for the same shape, so a large silver hoop puts less load on a lobe than the gold version of it. If you want big earrings for daily wear and your piercings are already loose, that is a real argument for going to sterling silver earrings for the large pieces and keeping gold for the studs. Plenty of our customers do exactly that, and mixing metals in different piercings looks deliberate rather than accidental.

First gold earrings after a piercing

A newly healed piercing is fussy, and gold is the metal most people move to once the initial studs come out. Two things matter.

Go light and small. A 3mm or 4mm stud with a plain butterfly puts almost no load on tissue that has only just settled. Save hoops for a few months later, because a hoop moves in the hole every time you turn your head, and movement is what irritates a fresh piercing.

Ask about the alloy. 9ct gold is 37.5 percent gold, and the rest is other metals. In yellow gold that is usually copper and silver. In white gold it can be different, and some white gold alloys contain nickel, which is the metal most people react to. If you or your child have reacted to earrings before, tell us before you order and we will point you at the pieces that suit. It is a two minute conversation on WhatsApp and it saves a wasted purchase.

Gold earrings for children

Gold studs for a child are a South African standard gift, given at christenings, first birthdays and confirmations. They work because gold does not react, does not need polishing and lasts long enough to be handed on.

Keep to 3mm or 4mm and keep to studs. Nothing that hangs, nothing that a toddler can pull, and nothing with a stone that can work loose. Screw backs are worth the extra fuss on a small child, because a butterfly that comes off in a cot is a swallowing risk.

Check the post length. A standard post is about 10mm, which is longer than a child's lobe needs, and a long post that sticks out the back catches on pillows. We can shorten a post in the workshop. Ask when you order rather than after.

If you are buying a set for the occasion, a matching gold pendant and a fine gold chain is the usual pairing, and we will box them together.

Salt air on this coast, and what it does to gold

People in Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, Sea Point and Muizenberg ask us this constantly. The honest answer is that solid gold does not corrode in salt air. Gold does not rust and it does not tarnish. You can live two hundred metres from the Atlantic and wear gold earrings every day for twenty years without the metal degrading.

What does happen is dulling. The copper and silver in the 9ct alloy react slowly with the air, and salt speeds that up a little. The result is a slight loss of shine rather than damage. A polishing cloth or two minutes in warm soapy water brings it straight back. Compare that to sterling silver on the same coast, which goes visibly dark in weeks. If you live near the sea and you are choosing between metals for something you will wear daily, gold is the low maintenance option by a wide margin.

That does not rule silver out. It just means silver needs a cloth and a closed pouch, which takes a minute a month. Our sterling silver jewellery range sells heavily in Blouberg and Milnerton and always has. If you already own silver chains or silver pendants and you are adding gold earrings, nothing clashes. The idea that you cannot mix the two has no basis and never did.

The Cape southeaster carries fine sand, and sand is abrasive. It will not hurt studs. It does get into the hinge of a huggie and the joint of a latch back, where it grinds. If you have been walking on Big Bay or Noordhoek in the wind, rinse your earrings under a tap that evening. That is the whole maintenance routine.

Swimming, pools and the sea

Sea water is fine. Take the earrings off if you are going into surf, because that is how earrings end up on the sea floor, but the water itself does nothing to gold.

Chlorine is a different story and this is where real damage happens. Chlorine attacks the alloy metals in gold, not the gold itself. Over repeated exposure it weakens the metal at thin points, which on an earring means the post, the hinge on a huggie and the joint on a hoop. The failure looks like a snap out of nowhere. It is not sudden. It is months of pool water doing quiet work.

So take gold earrings out before a pool. Tidal pools at St James and Camps Bay are sea water and are fine. Hot tubs are the worst case, because the chlorine is concentrated and the heat speeds the reaction up. If you have swum in a chlorinated pool with gold on, rinse it in fresh water immediately, which stops most of the harm.

The same warning applies to everything else you wear. Gold rings are the worst affected because a band is thin all the way round and takes the load of your hand. Gold bracelets and gold anklets fail at the clasp for the same reason, and an anklet spends more time in pool water than anything else you own. Take it all off before you swim, not just the expensive pieces.

Gym, sport and daily wear

Sweat is mildly acidic and it will dull gold over time in the same way sea air does. It causes no lasting damage. The practical risk at a gym is not the metal, it is the earring catching on a strap, a towel or a shirt being pulled over your head.

For training, wear huggies or studs under 5mm and nothing that hangs. For team sport, take them out entirely. For running, studs are fine and hoops of any size will bounce and irritate.

A general rule that saves more jewellery than any other. Put earrings on last, after hair, sunscreen and perfume. Take them off first, before you undress. Sunscreen in particular builds a film on gold that dulls it fast, and Cape Town summers mean most people wear it daily from October to March.

What to check before buying gold earrings anywhere

Buy from us or buy elsewhere, but check these four things either way. They separate a real gold purchase from an expensive mistake.

Look for the hallmark. Solid 9ct gold is stamped 375, and 18ct is stamped 750. On earrings the stamp is usually on the post or the back of the stud, and it is small. Bring a phone camera and zoom in. No stamp at all should prompt a question, not an assumption.

Ask the weight in grams. A seller who will not tell you the weight of a solid gold item is telling you something. Weight is what you are paying for and it is not a secret.

Feel the post. A proper gold post has some substance to it, around 0.8mm to 1mm. A post that bends under light finger pressure is either too thin to last or is not what you were told it is.

Get it in writing. The invoice should say 9ct or 18ct, not gold. The word gold on its own covers plated, filled, vermeil and solid, and those are wildly different products at wildly different prices. Every invoice we issue names the carat.

We are not against plated jewellery and we sell it. Our gold plated earrings sit in their own category with their own prices, and nobody buying from that page is under any illusion about what they are getting. What causes trouble is a seller who blurs the line. If you are comparing a R400 pair against our R1,295 solid studs, you are not comparing like with like, and the difference will show in three years.

Buying online against buying over a counter

Both work, and the honest comparison is not the one most online shops give you.

A counter lets you see scale, which is the biggest single advantage. Photographs cannot tell you whether a hoop reaches your jaw. You also walk out with the earrings the same day.

Online gives you the full range rather than what fits in a display case, and it is usually cheaper because the overhead is lower. The risk is scale, and you solve that with a ruler and the size tables above rather than with hope.

We do both, which is the point of having a workshop in Table View. Order online and collect if you want to see it first. Order online and have it delivered if that is easier. Or message us a photo of an earring you already own and we will tell you how the pair you are looking at compares in size. That takes us a minute and removes the only real disadvantage of buying gold on a screen.

Repairs, refits and remakes

Gold earrings are repairable, and this is a genuine advantage over cheaper metals that mostly are not worth fixing.

We resolder posts that have snapped, replace worn butterfly backs, convert butterflies to screw backs, shorten posts that sit too long, retighten stones that have loosened and repolish pairs that have gone dull. We also fit new hinges on huggies where the click has stopped holding. Most of this is quick and costs a small fraction of a new pair.

The workshop also remakes. If you have lost one earring of a pair you love, bring us the survivor. Making a matching second in gold is often possible, and it is nearly always cheaper than buying a new pair at today's gold price. Bring old broken gold in too. It has scrap value and can go toward whatever you buy.

The workshop handles the rest of the range on the same terms. We resize gold rings, shorten and lengthen gold chains, refit clasps on gold bracelets and reshape gold bangles that have gone oval. You do not have to have bought the piece from us. Bring it in or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it needs and what it costs.

Matching earrings to the rest of your gold

Earrings are usually the first solid gold piece someone buys, because the entry price is lower than a chain or a ring of any substance. Once you own a pair, the rest of a set builds itself.

The natural next step is a gold pendant on a fine gold chain, because it repeats the metal at the neckline without competing with the ears. Keep the pendant modest if the earrings are large. Two statement pieces at once cancel each other out.

After that, most people go to the wrist. Gold bracelets and gold bangles are the pieces that get seen most, because your hands are in front of you all day. Our 9ct gold bangles guide covers sizing, which is the part people get wrong. Gold rings and gold anklets finish the picture.

One rule holds the whole thing together. Match the colour, not the shape. All yellow, all white or all rose reads as a set even when the pieces come from different ranges and different years. Matching shapes across ears, neck and wrist reads as a matching set from a catalogue, which is a different look and one most people tire of.

Silver earrings, and when they are the better buy

We sell 29 sterling silver earrings from R150 to R3,295, and there are four situations where they beat gold outright.

When you are testing a size or a style you have never worn. When the earrings are for a child or a teenager who is still losing things. When you want something large and dramatic that you will wear a handful of times. And when the piercing is stretched and cannot carry weight any more.

Gold wins on everything else. It does not tarnish, it holds value, it survives the coast without maintenance, and it can be repaired indefinitely. That is why our gold earrings outsell silver on value even though silver outsells gold on units.

If silver is where you are heading, the wider sterling silver range holds 166 pieces, including silver chains, silver pendants, silver rings, silver bangles and silver bracelets. Everything ships from Table View on the same timeline as the gold.

Delivery and collection across Cape Town

Orders placed before midday on a working day usually go out the same afternoon. Northern suburbs, the Atlantic seaboard, the City Bowl, southern suburbs and the West Coast strip through Table View, Parklands, Sunningdale, Big Bay and Melkbosstrand are typically next day. Somerset West, Stellenbosch and the far south run a day behind that in busy periods.

Collection from the Table View workshop is free and available on request. Call 021 554 1717 before you come so we have the pair out and ready. If you are collecting because you want to compare two options in person, say so when you order and we will have both on the counter.

We ship nationally too. Everything on this page reaches Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and the rest of the country through a tracked courier.

What you are buying. Every earring in this range is solid 9ct or 18ct gold and hallmarked. Where a piece carries lab grown diamonds rather than mined diamonds, the product name says so. We sell gold plated jewellery elsewhere on the site and we never describe it as gold on its own. Your invoice names the carat. If a pair arrives and is not what you understood it to be, message us on 061 408 4046 and we will fix it.

Questions

What size stud should I buy?

Four millimetres suits the widest range of people for everyday wear. Three millimetres is discreet enough for a second piercing or a child. Five and six millimetres read clearly as jewellery. Hold a ruler to your ear in a mirror before ordering, because screens give you no sense of scale.

What hoop size is the classic look?

Twenty to twenty five millimetres, which sits roughly level with your jaw. Under fifteen millimetres is a work and everyday size. Over thirty millimetres drops below the jawline and becomes an occasion earring. A thick hoop reads larger than a thin one of the same diameter.

Do gold earrings tarnish in Cape Town sea air?

No. Gold does not tarnish or corrode. What you may see is slight dulling as the copper and silver in the alloy react with the air, and a polishing cloth removes it in seconds. Sterling silver on this coast is a different matter and darkens quickly, though a cloth and a closed pouch handle it.

Can I swim in gold earrings?

Sea water is harmless to the metal, though surf is how earrings get lost. Chlorine is the real problem. It weakens the alloy at thin points like posts and hinges, and pieces snap months later. Take them out before a pool or a hot tub, and rinse them in fresh water if you forget.

Why do I keep losing one earring?

It is almost always the back, not the earring. Butterfly backs grip by friction and that grip weakens every time you take them off. If the back slides on with no resistance, it is worn. We fit new backs cheaply, or convert to screw backs, which we recommend on any expensive pair.

Will heavy gold earrings stretch my ears?

Worn daily over years, yes. The hole slowly becomes an oval and the earring starts to sit at an angle. Keep heavy pairs for occasions, rotate what you wear, and use huggies or latch backs if a piercing has already started to stretch, since those spread the weight rather than hanging it from one point.

What is the difference between a huggie and a hoop?

A huggie is a small hoop that sits tight against the lobe with almost no gap, usually closing with a hinge that clicks. It is the most secure earring style we sell. A hoop leaves a visible gap between the earring and the ear and swings.

What is a creole earring?

A hoop that is thicker at the bottom than the top, so it tapers. The shape catches more light at its widest point and leans slightly forward on the ear. Our faceted creoles add cut surfaces to that taper, which is why they sparkle without carrying stones.

Where do I find the hallmark on an earring?

Usually on the post, or on the flat back of a stud. It is small, so use a phone camera and zoom in. Solid 9ct gold is stamped 375. Eighteen carat is stamped 750. If there is no stamp, ask the seller why before you buy.

Are gold earrings safe for a newly healed piercing?

Solid gold is the metal most people move to once initial studs come out. Start with a small light stud rather than a hoop, since hoops move in the hole every time you turn your head. If you have reacted to earrings in the past, message us before ordering and we will tell you which alloys are in which pieces.

What earrings suit a baby or a small child?

A 3mm or 4mm solid gold stud with a screw back. Nothing that hangs, nothing with a stone that can loosen. Ask us to shorten the post, because a standard 10mm post is longer than a child's lobe needs and catches on bedding.

Can you repair a broken gold earring?

Yes. We resolder snapped posts, replace worn backs, refit hinges on huggies, shorten posts, retighten stones and repolish dull pairs at the Table View workshop. Most repairs cost a small fraction of a new pair.

I lost one earring of a pair. Can you make another?

Usually yes. Bring us the survivor and we will quote on making a match. It is often cheaper than replacing the pair at today's gold price, and it means you keep the earrings you actually liked.

How fast is delivery in Cape Town?

Order before midday on a working day and it usually ships that afternoon, reaching Table View, Blouberg, Milnerton, Century City, the Atlantic seaboard and the northern suburbs the next day. Somerset West, Stellenbosch and the far south can take a day longer in busy periods.

Can I collect instead of having them delivered?

Yes, from the workshop in Table View, free of charge. Call 021 554 1717 first so the pair is out and ready. If you want to compare two options side by side, say so when you order and we will have both waiting.

Do you buy old gold?

We take old and broken gold against a purchase. Bring it in and we will weigh it and tell you what it is worth toward whatever you are buying. Broken earrings, single survivors and worn chains all count.

Why do earrings cost more than a pendant of the same size?

Because you are buying two of them. Gold is priced by weight, and a pair is double the metal of a single gold pendant that looks the same size on a screen. That is the whole explanation for what looks like an odd price gap.
