How to choose a sterling silver bracelet

Most people buy a sterling silver bracelet on how it looks in a photograph and then find out how it actually wears. These are the four things that decide whether it gets worn or ends up in a drawer.

Weight. This is the one nobody thinks about. A 4mm figaro at R695 is barely noticeable on the wrist. A 16mm ball bracelet at R5,995 announces itself every time you move your arm. Neither is better, but they suit different people, and if you have never worn a heavy bracelet, start lighter than you think you want.

Whether it will be worn with a watch. A bracelet sharing a wrist with a watch needs to be finer, or it will knock the case and mark both. Fine figaro, herringbone and station bracelets sit well next to a watch. Chunky curb and knotty styles do not.

How you use your hands. If you type all day, a heavy bracelet slides down onto the back of your hand and gets in the way. If you work with your hands, open link styles catch on things. Flat profiles like herringbone and curb behave better for both.

Whether it needs a clasp you can work alone. A lobster clasp on your own dominant wrist is genuinely difficult one handed. Elasticated and larger toggle styles solve it. If the bracelet is a gift for someone who lives alone, that matters more than the design does.

Getting the length right

Measure around your wrist bone, then add the gap you want. This is the one measurement worth getting right, because a bracelet that is too tight will not sit flat and one that is too loose spins and wears at the clasp.

Heavier bracelets sit lower on the wrist, so if you are buying a chunky style go up one step rather than down. If you are buying a gift and cannot measure, 18cm suits most women and 20cm most men.

Silver, gold or gold plated

People often assume silver is the compromise choice. On bracelets it frequently is not, and it is worth understanding why before you spend more than you need to.

A bracelet is judged on presence more than on material. Width and weight are what people notice, and both cost money in any metal. Silver lets you buy width. Ten millimetres of solid silver costs a fraction of ten millimetres of solid gold, and on the wrist the wider piece reads as the more expensive one.

Wearing and caring for a silver bracelet

Wear it. Silver tarnishes fastest sitting in a drawer, because skin oils actually slow the reaction down. Tarnish is a surface film, not corrosion, and a polishing cloth reverses it in a minute.

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush through the links for cleaning. Dry it properly, because water trapped in links is what dulls a bracelet fastest. Do not use toothpaste, which is abrasive.

Take it off for the gym and for swimming. Chlorine is harder on silver than anything else it will meet, and a bracelet caught between a bar and your wrist will bend.

Check the clasp every few months. A worn clasp spring is the most common reason a bracelet gets lost, and replacing one costs very little.
